How to read an NWS marine forecast next to a recreational rating

Small Craft Advisories, seas, period, watches vs warnings — plain English for weekend skippers who also use a Good / Fair / Poor app. About a 15-minute read. Last updated August 23, 2026.

Most recreational boaters learn weather from a phone app and never read the actual marine forecast. That is understandable — the National Weather Service marine product is written in a compressed, almost telegraphic style that was designed for VHF broadcast and for mariners who already know the vocabulary. But it is still the authoritative source, it is free, and it contains information that no consumer summary can invent: official advisories, hazard headlines, and a forecaster’s judgment about how the day evolves.

The good news is that the marine forecast has maybe a dozen recurring phrases. Once you can decode those, you can read any coastal or offshore zone in about ninety seconds and know more than the person next to you at the ramp.

Marine zones are not your ZIP code

The first and most common mistake is checking the land forecast for the town where the ramp is. Land forecasts are written for people standing on land. They describe temperature, rain chance, and a wind value measured at a sheltered airport anemometer ten meters above a runway surrounded by buildings and trees.

Marine forecasts are issued for marine zones — named chunks of water like “Coastal waters from Tarpon Springs to Suwannee River out 20 NM” or “Lake Michigan from Port Washington to Sheboygan.” A zone is typically tens of miles long and extends some distance offshore. That geography matters twice. First, the wind over open water is not slowed by trees and houses, so it is routinely 5–10 mph stronger than the number your town forecast shows. Second, a single zone can cover water that behaves very differently at its two ends.

Many zones are also split into an inner and outer portion, often at the 5 or 10 nautical mile line, because seas build with distance from shore. If a forecast says “seas 2 feet or less within 5 NM, 3 to 4 feet beyond,” that is not hedging. That is a real gradient you will feel as you run out.

Bays, sounds, and inland waterways usually get their own separate zones with their own text. If you are fishing a bay, read the bay zone, not the coastal one. They can disagree substantially on a windy day, and the bay zone is the one describing your water.

Small Craft Advisory: what it does and does not mean

A Small Craft Advisory (SCA) is the headline most recreational boaters will encounter. The thresholds vary by region and by the local weather forecast office, but the typical trigger is sustained winds around 20 to 33 knots, or seas above a locally defined height — often 5 to 7 feet on the open coast, and lower in protected waters and on the Great Lakes.

Here is the part people get wrong: the NWS does not define “small craft.” There is no length cutoff. The advisory is a statement that conditions are hazardous to inexperienced mariners in vessels vulnerable to those conditions, and it deliberately leaves the judgment to you. A 40-foot sportfisher may be entirely comfortable in an SCA. An 18-foot bay boat with three people aboard is often not.

The practical translation for most recreational skippers is blunt: if an SCA is in effect for the hours you plan to be on the water and your boat is under roughly 25 feet, treat that as a default no that requires a specific, defensible reason to override. Not a challenge. Not a suggestion. The advisory also frequently means the ride home will be worse than the ride out, because afternoon wind and building seas compound.

Watch for the phrase “Small Craft Should Exercise Caution.” That is a softer, non-advisory statement used when conditions are approaching but not meeting SCA criteria — often 15 to 20 knots. On a small boat that phrase is worth as much as the advisory itself.

Seas and period: two numbers, one ride

Marine forecasts state significant wave height, usually written as “seas 3 to 5 feet.” Significant wave height is a statistical measure: roughly the average height of the highest one-third of waves. That definition has an important consequence. Individual waves regularly exceed it. A rough planning rule is that the largest wave you are likely to meet in a few hours is close to twice the significant height. A “3 to 5 foot” forecast contains occasional 7- and 8-footers.

Height alone does not describe the ride. Wave period — the seconds between crests — determines whether water lifts you or hits you. Four feet at 9 seconds is a long, rolling swell that most boats handle comfortably at cruising speed. Four feet at 4 seconds is a steep, stacked wall of chop that will beat the boat, soak the crew, and cut your speed in half.

Typical periods are regional. Gulf of Mexico and Tampa Bay wind chop often runs 3 to 5 seconds. The Southeast Atlantic commonly sits at 4 to 8. Southern California swell frequently arrives at 8 to 14 seconds because it was generated by a storm thousands of miles away. Learn your local baseline. A period that is unusually short for your water is the warning sign; a longer than normal period is generally a smoother day.

Also watch for forecasts that mention two wave trains — “seas 4 feet, dominant period 8 seconds, wind wave 2 feet at 4 seconds.” When swell and locally generated wind waves come from different directions, the water gets confused and lumpy in a way that neither number captures on its own.

Watches, warnings, advisories, and statements

The NWS uses a consistent hierarchy across all hazard types, and learning it once pays off everywhere.

  • Watch: conditions are favorable for the hazard to develop, typically in the next 12 to 48 hours. It is not happening yet. A watch is a planning signal — the moment to build a backup plan, not the moment to cancel.
  • Advisory: the hazard is expected or occurring and is significant but generally not life-threatening to a prepared, well-found vessel. Small Craft Advisory and Dense Fog Advisory live here.
  • Warning: the hazard is imminent or occurring and is dangerous. Gale Warning (34–47 knots), Storm Warning (48–63 knots), Special Marine Warning for a severe thunderstorm or waterspout. For recreational boating, a warning of any kind ends the discussion.
  • Special Marine Warning (SMW): short-fused, issued for a specific approaching thunderstorm with winds of 34 knots or more, hail, or a waterspout. These come out with very little lead time — often 30 to 60 minutes. If you hear one on VHF for your area, act immediately.
  • Statement: follow-up or informational text, including updates that cancel or extend an earlier product.

Also learn to read the timing language. “This afternoon” means noon to 6 PM. “Tonight” means 6 PM to 6 AM. “Late this afternoon” means roughly 3 to 6 PM. Forecasters use these terms precisely, so a headline that says winds increase “late this afternoon” is telling you something specific about your return window.

Reading the zone text in ninety seconds

A coastal zone forecast follows a predictable order. Headlines come first, in capitals — any advisories or warnings in effect. Then a synopsis describing the large-scale setup: a front, a high pressure ridge, a trough. Then period-by-period text: TODAY, TONIGHT, TOMORROW, and so on, each with wind direction and speed, seas, and weather.

A typical line reads: “SE winds 10 to 15 knots. Seas 2 to 3 feet. Scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.” Three facts. Wind direction matters as much as speed — a southeast wind on a west-facing shore is offshore, meaning flat water at the ramp and building seas as you run out. Reverse the geometry and you get a lee shore with steep breakers at the beach and a nasty ride home.

Read at least two periods past the one you care about. The forecast for tonight tells you whether the afternoon deterioration is transient or the start of a multi-day pattern, and whether an overnight anchoring plan is realistic.

Pairing the official forecast with a recreational summary

Consumer boating apps compress weather into a simple verdict — Good, Fair, Poor, or a color. That compression is genuinely useful. It is fast, it is consistent across days, and it forces the underlying numbers into a single decision. But a summary is derived from numerical model output, and it cannot include a forecaster’s reasoning or an official hazard headline unless the app explicitly ingests them.

The reliable habit is to use them in this order. Start with the summary to decide whether the day is worth further thought. If it looks plausible, open the NWS zone forecast for your actual water and check three things: any headline in effect, the wind direction and speed for your return window, and the seas plus period. If the two sources disagree, the official product wins — especially on hazards.

Disagreement is itself information. When a summary says Good and the zone carries a Small Craft Advisory, something in the geometry is not being captured: an inlet, a fetch orientation, a sea breeze convergence. Finally, get in the habit of listening to NOAA Weather Radio on VHF while under way, or at least monitoring channel 16. Special Marine Warnings are broadcast there first. A phone in a dry bag below deck is not a warning system.
