This page is a reference hub: definitions weekend skippers actually use, links to authoritative U.S. weather and safety sources, and a path into BoatCast’s original guides. It is not a forecast and not a list of auto-generated city pages.

Glossary
- Fetch
- The distance wind blows over open water. Longer fetch usually means larger waves for the same wind speed. A narrow creek and a five-mile bay are not the same “15 mph.”
- Period
- Time between wave crests, usually in seconds. Short period (roughly 3–5 s on many bays) feels steep and wet on a small boat. Longer period can feel more rolling even at similar height.
- Seas / combined seas
- NWS language for overall wave height in a marine zone — often a mix of wind waves and swell. Height without period is incomplete for trailerable boats.
- Swell
- Waves that have traveled away from the wind that created them. Coasts import swell; most inland lakes do not. Swell direction and period matter as much as height.
- Chop
- Short-period wind waves that stand up quickly. Common on lakes and shallow bays. Harder on small boats than the same height of long swell.
- Small Craft Advisory (SCA)
- An NWS product saying conditions are expected to be hazardous for small craft in a marine zone. Thresholds vary by office. It is hazard language, not a precise boat-length cutoff.
- Watch vs warning
- A watch means conditions are favorable for a hazard in a window. A warning means the hazard is occurring or imminent. Special Marine Warnings are short-fuse marine thunderstorm products.
- Sea breeze / lake breeze
- Daytime onshore flow that builds as land heats faster than water. Often turns a glassy morning into a windier, choppier afternoon.
- Land breeze
- Weaker overnight/offshore flow as land cools. Can matter for dawn trips and for fog that likes light wind.
- Visibility (marine)
- How far you can see over water. Common recreational bands: Good above ~5 NM, Fair ~2–5 NM, Poor under ~2 NM. Period forecasts should respect the minimum in the window, not only the average.
- Float plan
- A short note left with someone on shore: who is going, where, when you expect to return, and when to worry. It is not paperwork theater — it is how help starts.
- Weather window
- The hours that are actually workable for your boat and crew — including the return — not the single nicest hour of the day.

A simple pre-launch habit
- Pick the water you will actually run — not the house ZIP.
- Read return hours, not only launch hours.
- Check official alerts for that marine zone or county.
- Leave a float plan with someone on shore.
- Cancel early when the limiting factor is skill-proof (lightning, dense fog, SCA you would not take).
