Thunderstorm safety on a small boat: exit plans, not optimism
What recreational boaters should do when lightning is in the window — shelter choices, timing, and when to never launch. About a 14-minute read. Last updated August 23, 2026.

A thunderstorm is the one weather hazard where a recreational boat has essentially no good options once it is happening. You cannot outrun most storms, you cannot shelter effectively on an open boat, and the three separate threats a storm carries — lightning, wind, and visibility — arrive together and reinforce each other.
That makes storms different from wind and chop, where seamanship and throttle management genuinely help. With lightning, essentially all of your leverage is in decisions made before you launch and in the first few minutes of noticing a building cell. After that you are managing consequences.
Why open boats are a bad place to be
Lightning tends to strike the tallest object in an area. On open water, that object is your boat — specifically the highest point, which is usually an antenna, a T-top, a poling platform, a mast, or a standing person. There is nothing taller for miles to compete for the discharge.
A car is safe in a thunderstorm because its metal shell forms a conductive cage that routes current around the occupants and into the ground. Most recreational boats provide nothing comparable. A fiberglass hull is not a Faraday cage and is not a ground path. A larger vessel with a properly bonded lightning protection system and a substantial underwater ground plate is a meaningfully different situation, but that describes very few trailerable boats.
A strike is also not the only way lightning injures people. Current spreading through the water and through the boat’s wiring and metal fittings can injure occupants who were nowhere near the attachment point, and side flashes can jump from a struck object to a person standing close to it. Even a nearby strike commonly destroys electronics, VHF radios, and engine control modules — which turns a survivable event into a disabled boat with no communications in the middle of a squall.
And lightning is frequently not the thing that actually hurts you. Thunderstorm downdrafts produce sudden outflow winds that can go from calm to 40 or 50 knots in under a minute, from a direction with no relationship to the prevailing wind. That wind arrives on water that was flat, raises a steep breaking chop in minutes, and can knock down or swamp a small boat outright. Heavy rain simultaneously drops visibility to a few hundred feet. Capsizes and collisions in squall conditions are more common than lightning strikes.
When not to launch at all
The strongest version of storm safety is the boring one: do not be out there. Some situations should simply end the discussion at the ramp.
- Thunderstorms are forecast for any hour inside your trip window, and your boat is small, open, or slow. Storm timing forecasts routinely err by an hour or two in either direction.
- A Severe Thunderstorm Watch or Warning, or a Special Marine Warning, is in effect for your area. A watch means conditions are favorable — that is a planning stop, not a nuance to work around.
- You can already see towering cumulus with hard, cauliflower-like edges growing vertically, especially if the tops are starting to flatten and spread.
- You hear thunder from the parking lot. Thunder is audible at roughly ten miles, and ten miles is well inside the range at which a storm can produce a strike or reach you.
- The planned trip cannot be aborted quickly. A run that puts you twenty miles from the nearest protected water is a different proposition from a bay trip with three creek mouths to duck into.
In the Southeast and along the Gulf, summer afternoon storms are so routine that “no storms in the forecast” is often unavailable for weeks at a time. The realistic answer there is not to stop boating — it is to move the trip into the morning and be off the water before the daily convection fires. Building an exit plan before you need it
If you do go out on a day with storm potential, the trip should be designed around getting off the water rather than around the destination. Concretely, that means answering a few questions before you leave the dock.
Where is shelter? Identify two or three places you could reach and be reasonably protected — a ramp, a marina, a creek mouth with high banks, the lee side of an island. Note them on the chart, not just in your head.
How long to reach them? Calculate the time at a realistic speed in deteriorating conditions, not your best flat-water cruise. Then set a rule: never travel farther from shelter than the time you are willing to be exposed.
What is your trigger? Pick an observable event that starts the return, and commit to it in advance. Reasonable triggers include the first thunder you hear, a building cell on radar within a set distance, a visible anvil top upwind, or a specific clock time. Waiting until the storm is obviously coming for you is waiting too long — thunderstorm cells commonly move at 20 to 35 mph, and many boats are not much faster than that in the chop the storm generates.
Which way is it moving? Watch the storm’s motion relative to a fixed reference — a bearing on the compass, a point of land. A cell that stays on a constant bearing while growing is coming at you. Do not run toward the shelter that requires crossing in front of it; take the option that keeps the storm behind or beside you, even if it is farther.
Radar on a phone is genuinely useful for this, with two important caveats. Radar imagery is typically five to fifteen minutes old, so the cell is always farther along than the picture shows. And radar shows precipitation, not lightning — a cell can produce strikes several miles outside the visible rain, and the first strike of a developing storm can come from a cell that barely registers.
If you get caught anyway
Assume at some point you will misjudge it. The priorities in order:
- Life jackets on, everyone, right now. Before the wind arrives, not after. This is the single action with the largest effect on outcomes, and there is no time to do it once the boat is being thrown around.
- Get everyone low and inside the boat. Down in the cockpit, away from the gunwales, away from the tallest structure, and not touching metal — rails, outriggers, T-top frames, engine controls, or anything bonded to them. Keep hands and arms inside.
- Secure the boat for wind. Stow loose gear, close hatches, and drop or secure canvas and bimini tops that will act as a sail.
- Slow down and take the seas at an angle. Head into or slightly off the wind at the minimum speed that maintains steerage. Do not try to run downwind at speed in a following breaking chop.
- Turn on navigation lights and sound signals. Visibility in heavy rain is a collision problem, and other boats are making the same run for shelter.
- Unplug or disconnect what you can. Handheld electronics in a dry, non-conductive location, and stay off the VHF handset unless you need it for an emergency.
- Wait it out. Most individual cells pass in twenty to forty minutes. Do not resume the trip immediately — the standard guidance is to wait thirty minutes after the last thunder before returning to exposure.
What not to do
- Do not shelter under a bridge. It is a tall structure attracting strikes, the current and wind funnel underneath it, and other boats will crowd in with the same idea.
- Do not anchor under trees on a shoreline. Trees are strike targets and side flashes reach outward. Open water a short distance off a wooded bank is preferable to sitting beneath a tall pine.
- Do not swim or trail limbs in the water, and get anyone in the water back aboard as the first action, before securing gear.
- Do not try to outrun a cell across open water. If the storm is closer to your route home than you are, take a different shelter.
- Do not assume the gap is over. Storms frequently come in clusters, and the calm, bright interval between cells is often twenty minutes, not the end.
- Do not treat a strike as harmless because everyone is standing. Check people and check the boat — strikes can crack through-hull fittings and cause slow flooding, and can damage electronics in ways that appear later.
One last point about people. If someone is struck, they carry no charge and are safe to touch immediately. Cardiac arrest is the primary cause of death from lightning, and CPR started promptly is effective. Call for help and begin resuscitation without hesitation.
